Hepatitis C Virus In Pregnancy: An Opportunity to Test and Treat

Abstract

Pregnancy is an excellent opportunity for Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) infection testing and treatment and may prevent the 5-8% risk of perinatal HCV transmission. HCV infection is increasing among pregnant women who use drugs. Many providers may not ask about risks, therefore patients often do not disclose. In this session, Dr. Chappell will share her research on HCV treatment during pregnancy, including details on cure rates for HCV in pregnant women, effectively reducing risk of perinatal transmission.

Objectives

  • Understand how risk-based screening misses many people with HCV
  • Learn the importance of HCV screening and treatment, and ow they are implemented during pregnancy
  • Understand the cost-effectiveness of universal screening for HCV in pregnancy, much like existing universal screening for HIC and Hepatitis B
