Raising Grandchildren: Understanding and Supporting the Caregiving Grandparent
Abstract
Pennsylvania, approximately 235,000 grandparents are responsible for their grandchildren. For every child being raised by kin in foster care, there are 10 more being raised by kin out of foster care. This training will discuss how grandparents come to raise their grandchildren, balancing supporting adult children with raising the children, and the unique dynamics of raising one’s grandchildren. Furthermore, the training will address ways to support these caregiving grandparents encountered in one’s professional and personal lives.
Objectives
- Clarify the role of formal an informal kinship care and the ways in which these situations arise.
- Recognize and understand the dynamics of kinship care and the impact these have on a caregiver.
- Generate ways to support kinship caregivers in their professional and personal lives.
