ABSTRACT

Alcohol use during pregnancy can result in Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD); a group of conditions that can impact a person exposed to alcohol before birth. These effects can be physical, behavioral, and learning-related. There is a need for increased awareness of FASD, in order to screen for and identify those who are impacted. Outcomes for infants and children with FASD can be improved with an established system of care that includes education, prevention, and services to support individuals and families of all ages who are impacted by FASD.

OBJECTIVES

  1. Provide a brief overview of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASDs)
  2. Describe the incidence and prevalence of FASDs
  3. Provide facts about alcohol use among pregnant women
  4. Describe the recommended screening and brief intervention techniques
  5. Briefly Propose strategies to improve outcomes
