Abstract
This session will provide an overview of Recovery Support Services and the role of peer workers in supporting individuals impacted by substance use. Participants will learn how peer workers use lived experience, trust, and person-centered support to assist people across all stages of recovery, including active substance use, early recovery, and long-term recovery. The session emphasizes a “no wrong door” approach that welcomes all paths of recovery, including harm and risk reduction strategies, medication-assisted treatment, and abstinence-based recovery. The presentation will also address stigma related to substance use disorders and highlight how recovery support services promote hope, engagement, and long-term success.
Objectives
- Describe the role of peer workers and how lived experience is used to support individuals across the full continuum of substance use and recovery.
- Identify key principles of Recovery Support Services, including the “no wrong door” approach and the inclusion of harm/risk reduction and multiple recovery pathways.
- Explain how peer support can enhance recovery outcomes by promoting engagement, self-determination, and connection to services during active use, early recovery, and long-term recovery.
- Recognize the impact of stigma on substance use disorders and describe how peer workers help reduce stigma and promote understanding, dignity, and hope.
