Overdose prevention planning involves taking steps to reduce the risk of death.

Ask yourself the following questions, and develop a safety plan to reduce your risk of fatal overdose.

Who

If I experience an overdose, will someone be there to help me?

  1. Are there people around me and can we take turns using drugs?
  2. Is there someone who can check on me?
  3. Can I call the Never Use Alone hotline phone number (877-696-1996)?

Where

If I experience an overdose, will someone be able to find me?

  1. Does someone know where I am?
  2. If inside, is the room I am in unlocked?
  3. If outside, can someone see me and reach me?
  4. Is there naloxone visible nearby?

How

How does the way I use drugs change my risk of overdose?

  1. Can I use drug-checking services or fentanyl test strips?
  2. How am I taking my drugs?
  3. Can I use less or go slowly?
  4. Can I use only one drug at a time and avoid mixing drugs?

What

What drugs, medications or routines change my risk of overdose?

  1. What drug or drugs am I using?
  2. Has my tolerance changed?
  3. Am I taking any medications for opioid use disorder, such as methadone or buprenorphine?
