Abstract
Individuals who experience trauma face increased risk of substance use disorder, and individuals with substance use disorder face an increased risk of trauma. As such, the principles of trauma informed care can be used to create a more responsive, compassionate and welcoming environment for substance use prevention, treatment, and recovery. In this workshop, we will explore the principles of trauma informed care, and provide concrete examples of their application in the substance use context.
Objectives
- Participants will describe the role of trauma in both risk for substance use disorder and in substance use
- Participants will review the SAMHSA principles of trauma informed care
- Participants will identify specific trauma informed strategies to utilize with individuals engaged in substance use via promoting each principle of trauma informed care
