Abstract

An emergency physician in recovery shares his lived experience to illuminate the human side of substance use and treatment. This session blends clinical insight with personal perspective to foster compassion, reduce stigma, and improve care for patients experiencing substance-related crises. Participants will learn to identify and manage key presentations, including cannabis toxicity, stimulant overamping (methamphetamine and cocaine toxicity), and medetomidine withdrawal, while integrating trauma-informed and person-centered approaches into acute care settings.
Through storytelling and evidence-based discussion, this session aims to build empathy, clinical confidence, and a deeper understanding of how connection and respect can be life-saving interventions.

Objectives

  • Describe clinical presentations of cannabis toxicity, stimulant overamping, and medetomidine withdrawal.
  • Identify signs of substance use and withdrawal while minimizing stigma and bias.
  • Reflect how personal experiences and lived perspectives can enhance empathy and clinical practice.
