Suboxone: What's New in Clinical Practice and Prescribing Regulations

Abstract

Suboxone (buprenorphine) is a life-saving medication that has been proven to reduce overdose deaths and help support the recovery of individuals with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD). Despite these benefits, it is a greatly underutilized evidence-based treatment for OUD. The US is in the midst of a severe opioid epidemic resulting in the loss of over 100,000 lives each year to drug overdose. This presentation will review the basics of Suboxone and it’s use in the day to day practice of clinical medicine. There will be an emphasis on practical applications along with new information on clinical practices and recent policy changes which are important to understand when treating patients with OUD. It will conclude with a Q&A section and include links to a number of useful tools that can guide treatment professionals in its use.

  • Identify 2 promising new practices for Suboxone induction
  • List the new requirements for prescribing suboxone
  • Understand the benefits that Suboxone can bring to the treatment of Opioid Use Disorder

Accreditation

PHYSICIAN (CME)

The University of Pittsburgh designates this live activity for a maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

NURSING (CNE)

A maximum of 1.0 nursing contact hours will be awarded. Participants will be able to claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the program.
