Training Sessions

Abstract

This presentation provides recommendations on human milk provision in the setting of nonprescribed opioids, stimulant, sedative-hypnotic, alcohol, nicotine, and cannabis use, and SUD medication treatments. We will also discuss use of biological sampling to inform decision-making. In general, breastfeeding is recommended among mothers who stop nonprescribed substance use by the time of delivery. Providers should work with the family as a whole to ensure ongoing post-partum care, lactation support, and SUD care.

Objectives

  • Describes methods of providing human milk to infants.
  • Identify under which circumstances it is permissible (or even encouraged) to provide human milk to infants born to persons with a substance use history.
  • Recognize which patterns of substance use would represent a contraindication to providing human milk to a nursling.
  • Outline which SUD pharmacologic treatments are compatible with breastfeeding.
